Gregor Sander

German writer Gregor Sander originally trained as a locksmith and medic before studying journalism. He lives in Berlin and spends a month-long creative residency in Czechia in 2025. His debut short story collection, Ich aber bin hier geboren, was published in 2002, followed by his novel Abwesend (2007), which was nominated for the German Book Prize. His short story Winterfisch won the 3sat Prize at the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize in 2009. His works Was gewesen wäre (2014) and Alles richtig gemacht (2019) have also been published in Czech translation. Sander’s writing often explores themes related to the former GDR. However, in his latest novel, Lenin auf Schalke (2022), he takes an unexpected approach-reversing the perspective by portraying West Germany through the eyes of an Eastern guest.
